Worked full-time for the Data/Research unit, performed research and data analysis for The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s signature surveys; collected and analyzed IRS 990 forms of nonprofits; designed and reported data graphics for print and web, edited monthly data feature, contributed to blogging, occasional writing assignments.

Intern, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Washington, DC, September 2009 – December 2009

Reported full-time for the Money and Management team, covering issues of college administrators and finances. Mix of daily stories and project work. Only intern assigned to the Chronicle’s signature executive compensation project, analyzing IRS 990 forms and the compensation of college presidents.

Intern (Chips Quinn Scholar), The Washington Post, Washington, DC, June 2009-Aug, 2009

Reported full-time on a mix of enterprise and daily assignment stories in financial news and markets (ex: retail, real estate, insurance, small business); shot own photos; regular contributor to Small Change personal finance blog and column; enterprise local business stories picked up by LA Times, (Newark) Star Ledger, (Delaware) News Journal, CBS News and Atlanta Journal Constitution. Won 2009 Chips Achievement Prize for outstanding enterprise for a story on virtual assistants.

Intern, Saint Paul Pioneer Press, Saint Paul, MN, Aug. 2008-April 2009

Contributed to Republican National Convention coverage; received school credit for part-time work with local news team (Aug-Dec); received AAJA-Minnesota internship for 15-20 hrs/wk (Feb-Apr); covered local news and five suburban school districts, mostly enterprise work; attended weekly lectures with reporters and editors; seven A1 stories, and many local cover displays.

Reporter intern, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Minneapolis, MN, May-Aug 2008

Reported full-time on a variety of business beats throughout the summer (ex: retail, airlines, health, auto) ; many stories published as section cover displays and A1s. First story was lead story on A1 on second day of internship; reported stories ranging from a local dairy farm converting to organic, the wait time to purchase a hybrid car during $4-a-gallon gas, and a small town losing its only Starbucks.
